THE PHILOSOPHY OF SOUL-BASED PSYCHOLOGY AND INTEGRATIVE BREATHWORK, CREATED AND FOUNDED BY JACQUELYN SMALL, LMSW

Eupsychia's certification program is training in a process that utilizes both psychological and spiritual principles and methods for healing the whole psyche. The deep inner work involved is taught experientially amidst a caring community which creates a sacred space for accessing both our egos and our soul. This psychospiritual synthesis tracks with the basic tenets of Jungian and spiritual psychologies, as well as the Twelve-Step recovery philosophy.

Our philosophy is that healing ourselves and helping others is all one process. In retreat settings trainees are guided through their own healing work and then supervised in guiding others through journeys into non-ordinary states of consciousness. Our methods open the psyche and deal with both the personal and the collective unconscious mind. This deep inner work goes beyond where most talk therapies take us and accesses fundamental blocks holding dysfunctional patterns in place. Direct contact with the God-within, acceptance and forgiveness, Self-empowerment, and finding one's soul-purpose and true life's work are the focus of this program.

Soul-based Psychology is a "psychology of completion" for the closing of an Age. Its function is to enable us to release the aspects of our past that no longer work, both personally and collectively, and clear out the human psyche to make ready for the changes that are coming with the emergent millennium shift. We are not only leaving behind our personal "storylines," but we are helping to re-shape humanity as well, preparing for a more integrated life. Much of our human plight concerns problems that exist in the collective consciousness; and, as Dr. Carl Jung reminded us, we can never separate off from our collective roots, as we are as attached to them as we are to the organs of our physical bodies. Consequently, there is an evolutionary purpose to this certification process that extends beyond anyone's own personal healing; we are committing to serving humanity as well–by the very fact of our willingness to clear ourselves and turn toward a higher, more purposeful way of living that already exists within our consciousness.

This program is designed for professionals and non-professionals alike--for anyone interested in personal/planetary transformation and especially in the "people-helping" fields of endeavor. The certification process will aid you in shifting creatively from traditional to emergent approaches to healing and well-being in the various areas of human service. It represents a shift away from disease-oriented philosophies toward a proactive view of human nature: Our crises are seen not as "sick, or pathology" but as symptoms of birthing a new consciousness. Eupsychia's philosophy is a synthesis of various schools of psychology, aspects of the ancient wisdom and spiritual traditions and philosophies. And it is compatible with the new sciences such as quantum/relativistic physics, systems biology, holographic brain research, and alternative and complementary medicine. We honor both Eastern and Western thought, but our methods are designed more for the Western mind.

When you complete our training program, you are certified in Soul-Based Psychology (Psychospiritual Integration) and as an Integrative Breathwork Practitioner, which means that we feel you are a safe person for others to open up with and undergo deep healing/transformational processes. We view the breathwork methodology as a powerfully effective psychic opener, but as a method only and not as standing alone. To us, breathwork belongs alongside meditation practices, hypnosis, transpersonal psychodramatic therapies, and other psycho-technologies which access the deeper strata of the unconscious mind. Practiced within a safe therapeutic setting, and with proper guidance, Integrative Breathwork opens the psyche to higher and more unified levels of consciousness, and is a balancer of energetic force. It also brings about catharsis of pent-up emotions and accesses cellular memory of past issues heretofore not integrated. Consequently, it is a healing method that has wide implications for people who have not benefited from ordinary psychotherapeutic intervention.

We believe a sacred space must be created in order to work with material released from the unconscious mind, and that a therapeutic milieu upheld by trained and naturally-therapeutic guides is essential to the opening of the human psyche. To lead us to emotional and spiritual well-being, we've found that all work in non-ordinary states of consciousness needs to integrate into our ordinary lives. The hallmark of Eupsychia's trainings is this safe and therapeutic environment.

For those of you with a classical metaphysical/esoteric background, Integrative Breathwork accesses cellular memory, the dense physical, etheric, astral, and mental "bodies" and opens us to the monadic/spiritual dimensions of the psyche. The language of this process can be modified to fit with any form of Eastern or Western psychospiritual orientation. We are transcribers of language, so we do not let semantics get in our way of a common understanding of what is emerging through this Self-educational/healing process. We look for the sameness behind our differences in psychological and religious schools of thought.

Soul-based psychology is training in working with the subjective life and integrating our insights and Self-discovery into our everyday life with our families and within our on-going professional lives. It includes training in transpersonal therapy and as a psychospiritual group leader (with both large teaching groups and small therapy groups), along with intensive training and experience as a breathwork practitioner.

Eupsychia's goal of certification is Self-empowerment for its participants. In undergoing this training, you will become empowered to practice in your own unique style within your particular sphere of influence as a certified practitioner of your own brand of Psychospiritual Integration. This is Being-level training, which affects all aspects of the practitioner's life, and is not knowledge-based--although certain experiential knowledge and mental frameworks are shared concerning the practice of Soul-Based Psychology and Integrative Breathwork based on our teachers' own in-depth experiences with this innovative approach. We are all teachers and students alike, pioneering this new work of "arting ourselves." And we continually learn from each other.

THE PROGRAM'S STRUCTURE

The certification process takes a minimum of two years of attending workshop intensives and integrating the subjective experiences that come forth from within the psyche. This is a student-centered model wherein you involve in the designing of your own particular program with us. This groupwork occurs in retreat settings around North America. The training is made up of certain required components, standardized somewhat, but individualized to fit the special needs and varying past experience of each student. Following is the required format for people becoming students:

  • ATTENDANCE AT ONE (1) 10-DAY INTENSIVE AS A PARTICIPANT IN THE HEALING TRACK. In this experience, trainees enter fully into work on themselves and have no training responsibilities. In addition to the benefit received from personal healing, they are experiencing the work from the standpoint of those whom they will later serve.
  • ATTENDANCE FROM THREE (3) TO FOUR (4) OF EUPSYCHIA'S 6-DAY INTENSIVES. (the number we require will depend on your past training and experience in psychotherapy, addiction counseling, breathwork, or related educational/training experiences. When we feel it necessary, some supervised sessions with a Eupsychia mentor will be suggested and we will assist you in finding this assistance which will include 'working the floor' at some breathwork sessions and training in small groupwork with mentor feedback.
  • TWO FINAL 12-DAY INTENSIVES as the last stage of training where the trainees come in the role of "intern" and work alongside Eupsychia's senior staff with the participants there for healing. This is a hands-on supervised training program. These two required 12-day intensives are spaced six months apart (a fall program and then a spring program, in that order) where students are asked by invitation only to this internship program once the above prerequisites are completed and the apprentice supervisor feels the student is ready. Though invited to be an intern means that our staff feels you are ready to pursue this training to graduation, this invitation does not guarantee that the student will graduate. Eupsychia reserves the right to dismiss a student or intern from this program at any time in our sole discretion. The 10-day intensive attended for healing does not replace either of the 12-day components. The time in-between the two 12-day internships is an integral part of the training experience and allows for a time to begin one's practice in Psychospiritual Integrationand Integrative Breathwork, providing students an opportunity to integrate and practice and learn of their strengths and weaknesses. The final 12-day training in the Spring culminates in a graduation ceremony and certification by Eupsychia with your group of peers.
  • BOOKS BY JACQUELYN SMALL ARE REQUIRED READING, as well as a Synopsis of Stan Grof's work in Holotropic Breathwork and Transpersonal Psychology which we have prepared as a study guide for Eupsychia's students. Suggested readings are also offered individually along the way to supplement this training, according to each person's particular interests. There are no written examinations.

Eupsychia offers at least two 6-day intensives per year and two 12-day intensives for students, a 10-day for participants in the healing track. If demand requires, we will add more. With guidance from a Eupsychia staff member, trainees can pick and choose which intensives to attend.

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST

We suggest that before you fill out an application for this program that you attend at least one 6-day Eupsychia event or come on to a 10-day wellness program for healing. This will count toward your prerequisites should you decide to become a student.

You do not need a degree in order to become a Eupsychia student. If you are interested in getting a degree in a related field, we find our work compatible with such a choice, and we can help you with this process. Some college programs will allow your Eupsychia work to count toward your required coursework, especially in mental health or addiction programs.

This certification program does not replace the need for licensure in any state. However, Eupsychia is certified to give Continuing Education Credit to Substance Abuse Counselors (PN 0331-89), Social Workers (CS1260), Marriage and Family Therapsits, Licensed Professional Counselors(PN #1919) and Psychologists in the state of Texas. We were approved in March of 2002, to give Continuing Education credit to Massage Therapists in Texas. If you need such credit, be sure and check with your state licensing board(s) to determine if Texas has reciprocity.

To become a certified practitioner of this process can become a vocation in itself in certain cases, or it can become ancillary to some other career you may have. Therapists from some areas like to utilize practitioners to work with their clients in non-ordinary states of consciousness, while retaining the status themselves as primary therapist. Since this is an innovative program "on the growing edge" of Western psychology and health-related fields, the door is wide open for you to help pioneer this new movement. As a student and later a leader of this process, we welcome your input and offer each other group support in our creative efforts.

This certification process occurs within a loving community of seekers, both students and teachers alike. And part of our training is to learn how to invoke this safe and therapeutic groupwork setting for others.
