Beginning meditation questions?

What is the goal of meditation in each session, I know you won’t reach true enlightenment in one session.
If you’re not thinking in meditation than how are you to figure out enlightenment?
What is enlightenment?
Is Buddhism a religion or a life guide?
I thought the goal of Buddhist meditation was enlightenment?

When meditating, the “goal” can be to build attention, or to be more “present” in the moment.

You will become aware of your thinking… your true nature is essentialy “being” (be- ing, or conscious presence). With more and more practice, you build the calmness necessary to produce sharper attention, thus giving you the ability to concentrate more when meditating– which in turn builds calm. The more conscious you become, the closer you get to your true nature.

Enlightenment, as you’ve probably heard, cannot be defined– that is, trying to define it will not allow you to taste it– just as reading the word ‘honey’, or even studying what honey is and where it came from doesn’t give you the experience of tasting it– you have to actually taste it. Therefore, the Buddha defined it as what it is not. That is, he said Enlightenment is the cessation of suffering.

Buddhism has been turned into a religion by some Buddh-ists, but the teachings of the Buddha were meant to be followed as a path into Enlightenment.

Meditating can be as simple as that. However, I think you should read more about it as you practice, at least to give you some direction and confidence about the way you are meditating and how you can benefit greatly from it, moment-to-moment, and day-to-day.

!! Meditation has been somewhat reduced by the West as a mere relaxation tool– but that’s merely a product of meditating.
